Two people were hospitalized after a crash involving a MidAmerican bucket truck and three other vehicles on Illinois Route 84 near Lock Road in Fulton. According to the Whiteside County Sheriff’s Office, the crash occurred around 6:15 a.m. Monday when the northbound Freightliner utility truck allegedly crossed the center line and collided with a southbound Kia sedan and Buick crossover. The impact caused the Kia’s engine to dislodge, which was then struck by a fourth vehicle, a Dodge crossover. The Kia driver was airlifted with non-life-threatening injuries, and the Buick driver was also hospitalized. The Dodge driver was uninjured.

Whenever a commercial vehicle allegedly crosses into oncoming traffic, it raises serious concerns about what may have gone wrong.

Could Distraction or Fatigue Have Contributed?

One of the first questions investigators will likely consider is whether the driver of the utility truck may have been distracted or fatigued. Early morning hours can be especially risky if a driver hasn’t had sufficient rest. If the driver drifted across the center line without braking or swerving, it could indicate inattention or delayed reaction time. Investigators may examine the driver’s hours-of-service records, recent work shifts, and phone data to determine if fatigue or distraction played a role.

Should Mechanical Issues Be Considered?

Mechanical problems such as brake failure, steering malfunctions, or suspension issues could also explain why the truck veered across the center line. Given that the Freightliner was a utility vehicle, it likely carried additional weight in tools and equipment, which may have stressed older or poorly maintained systems. Investigators should inspect the truck’s brake system, tire condition, and steering components to rule out mechanical failure as a contributing factor.

What Kinds of Evidence Should Be Examined?

To understand what led up to the crash, investigators will likely review the truck’s Engine Control Module (ECM), GPS and telematics data, and any onboard cameras. Witness statements and traffic camera footage may also help clarify whether the truck gradually drifted or suddenly swerved. Maintenance records, driver logs, and any recent service history should be examined to determine if the vehicle was fit for service that morning.

Why a Full Investigation Is Critical

When a commercial truck crosses into oncoming traffic, it usually leads to a serious crash. Even if the injuries in this case were not life-threatening, the situation could have easily been much worse. It’s essential to determine what caused the vehicle to cross the center line and whether it was preventable through better oversight, maintenance, or driver actions.
