Reading Time: 2 minutes

A Thursday morning crash involving a dump truck and four other vehicles shut down all eastbound lanes of I-64 near Greenbrier Parkway. According to Virginia State Police, the incident occurred just before 8 a.m. when traffic slowed suddenly. An eastbound Mack dump truck allegedly could not stop in time and swerved to the right, striking four vehicles before hitting a guardrail. The dump truck overturned, spilling its load across the roadway. Several people were transported to Sentara Norfolk General Hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. The driver of the dump truck has been charged with reckless driving for failing to maintain proper control.

With the driver already facing charges, investigators will still need to determine whether other factors like vehicle condition played a role in why the truck was unable to stop in time.

Could Distraction or Fatigue Have Contributed?

The incident occurred during the morning commute, a time when traffic changes can happen quickly. Investigators should review the dump truck driver’s work schedule, rest breaks, and hours-of-service compliance to see if fatigue played a role. Cell phone records, GPS logs, and in-cab camera footage could also show whether the driver’s attention was diverted in the seconds before impact.

Were Mechanical Issues a Factor in the Driver’s Loss of Control?

Brake performance is a critical question when a commercial vehicle fails to stop in congested traffic. Inspecting the truck’s braking system, tires, and steering components will help determine if a defect or maintenance issue contributed. Engine Control Module (ECM) data can reveal the truck’s speed, brake application, and throttle position in the moments leading up to the crash, helping to confirm whether the braking system was functioning properly.

What Key Evidence Should Be Reviewed?

Investigators should collect ECM data, examine skid marks and debris patterns, and document the final positions of all vehicles. Witness statements and traffic camera footage could provide insight into the traffic conditions and the driver’s actions before the crash. The overturned truck’s load should also be reviewed. In cases like this, the weight and distribution could have affected stopping distance and stability.

Why a Full Investigation Is Necessary

Even with charges filed, understanding every contributing factor in a commercial vehicle crash is critical. A thorough review of driver condition, vehicle performance, and other circumstances will help ensure the facts are established and that accountability is accurately assigned.
