A collision on U.S. 60 in Wittmann sent three people to the hospital, including two children. Authorities reported that the crash occurred in the eastbound lanes just before noon on Saturday. A semi-truck and an SUV were involved, leaving one child in critical condition who was flown to the hospital. Another child and an adult were also hospitalized with serious injuries, while a second adult declined further treatment. The cause of the collision is still under investigation.

Serious crashes involving semi-trucks often require investigators to look at multiple potential factors. Understanding whether driver actions, vehicle condition, or other circumstances contributed will be key to explaining how this crash happened.

Was Driver Alertness a Factor?

Since the cause of this crash isn’t clear, investigators will need to review whether either driver was fatigued or distracted in the moments before impact. Hours-of-service logs for the truck driver could provide insight into how long he had been on the road. Witness statements, phone records, and any available dash or traffic camera footage could also help determine if inattention contributed.

Could a Mechanical Issue Have Contributed?

Mechanical problems such as brake failures, steering malfunctions, or tire blowouts can play a major role in collisions involving heavy trucks. Reviewing inspection records and service logs for the semi will be important in determining whether the vehicle was in safe operating condition. If the SUV experienced a mechanical failure, such as brake or steering issues, that too would need to be documented.

What Evidence Should Be Examined?

Engine Control Module (ECM) data from the semi-truck can reveal speed, throttle position, and brake use in the seconds before impact. Physical evidence such as skid marks, debris patterns, and vehicle resting positions will also be critical in reconstructing the sequence of events. Camera footage from nearby businesses or highway surveillance may provide additional context about how the vehicles approached the point of collision.

Why a Full Investigation Is Important

Since not a lot of information is known about the cause of the crash, the investigation is likely in its beginning stages. A full look into driver actions, vehicle conditions, and other factors will be necessary to provide answers about how and why it happened. Those findings will be vital for determining accountability.
