Examining the Runaway Semi-Truck Incident on I-29 in Mound City, MO

An incident on I-29 near Mound City, Missouri last Saturday afternoon claimed the life of a 33-year-old Nebraska man. According to the Missouri State Highway Patrol, a parked 1999 Peterbilt semi-truck slid down a hill and struck Travis Dozler, who had been walking nearby.

The semi, which was unoccupied at the time, had been parked on the east shoulder of the interstate. Winter weather conditions caused the truck to slide, ultimately hitting Dozler before running off the road and striking a light pole.

This incident raises critical questions about why the semi-truck was parked there and whether proper precautions were taken to prevent it from becoming a hazard.

Was the Semi-Truck Parked in a Safe Location?

One of the first questions investigators should address is whether the shoulder where the semi-truck was parked was a secure and appropriate place, given the conditions. Parking on an incline or in an area with poor traction increases the risk of a vehicle sliding, particularly in icy weather.

Commercial vehicles must be parked in areas where they will not pose a danger to others, even under adverse conditions. If a better location was available, it’s worth asking why the truck was not parked there instead.

Were the Truck’s Safety Measures Adequate?

Another critical factor is whether the semi-truck was properly secured. Parking brakes, wheel chocks, and other safety measures are essential to prevent unintended movement. Investigators should examine whether these systems were engaged and functioning as intended.

Mechanical failures, such as a malfunctioning brake system, may also have contributed to the truck becoming a runaway hazard. The truck’s maintenance records and inspection history will be key to understanding whether it met required safety standards.

What Kind of Evidence Should Be Examined?

A thorough investigation should include an analysis of the truck’s braking and safety systems to determine whether they were working properly at the time of the incident.

Traffic cameras or dashcam footage from another vehicle could show how and where the truck was parked. Given that this accident happened midday, there are likely witnesses. This could prove helpful if traffic cameras didn’t capture the runaway semi-truck.

Why These Questions Matter

This crash resulted in a death, so it’s essential that investigators review all possibilities. Determining whether the truck was parked in a secure location and whether all necessary precautions were taken will help provide clarity and accountability for this incident. In my experience, many crash investigations fail to answer all the questions those affected may have.
