A crash involving two tractor trailers closed the westbound lanes of I-64 in Washington Park on Monday evening. Illinois State Police say the collision occurred near Illinois 111 at mile marker 6. Preliminary reports indicate that a tractor-trailer car hauler reportedly struck the bridge and came to a stop in the lane. It was then allegedly hit by a second tractor-trailer hauling double trailers. According to the Washington Park Assistant Fire Chief, two men were inside one truck and a woman was in the other. The woman and one of the men were transported to the hospital in critical condition, while the other man sustained a serious injury.

Given the sequence of events, investigators will need to determine what led to the initial bridge strike and why the second semi could not avoid the stopped vehicle.

Could Mechanical Issues Have Been a Factor?

For the first semi, striking a bridge could indicate issues with load height, steering control, or braking performance. Inspecting the truck’s steering system, brakes, and suspension will be essential, along with reviewing whether the load met legal height limits. For the second semi, investigators should determine if brake fade, tire failure, or other mechanical problems reduced stopping ability. Retrieving Engine Control Module (ECM) data from both vehicles can reveal speed, braking effort, and throttle position before impact.

Could Distraction or Fatigue Have Played a Role?

It’s possible that distraction or fatigue contributed to both phases of this crash. The first semi’s collision with the bridge could have been caused by a lapse in attention to road conditions or signage. The driver of the second semi may not have been fully alert or scanning the roadway ahead for hazards. Hours-of-service logs, in-cab camera footage, and mobile device records will be important in identifying whether fatigue or distraction affected either driver’s performance.

What Evidence Should Be Reviewed?

Key evidence in this case includes ECM data from both trucks, load measurement records for the car hauler, and inspection reports for both vehicles’ brakes, tires, and steering components. Investigators should also examine physical evidence at the scene, such as skid marks, debris patterns, and point-of-impact locations. Any available bridge clearance data and relevant signage will help determine if inadequate clearance or driver error caused the initial strike.

Why a Complete Investigation Is Critical

When a crash between two large commercial vehicles results in critical injuries, identifying the precise causes is essential. Reviewing both driver actions and vehicle conditions will help determine accountability, uncover potential safety protocol issues, and provide clear answers to those affected.
