Authorities are investigating a crash on Interstate 45 near Leona, Texas, that left five people dead and another seriously injured Saturday afternoon.
According to the Texas Department of Public Safety, the crash occurred around 3:17 p.m. when a 2016 Dodge pickup truck traveling southbound allegedly veered off the road, struck a guardrail, then crossed the center median and vaulted over the cable barrier into oncoming traffic. It collided head-on with a 2023 Ford F-150 traveling northbound. Both vehicles caught fire after the impact.
All five occupants of the Ford F-150—driver Hermenegildo Melendez, 55, and passengers Veronica Cerda, 53; Veronica Denise Cerda, 26; Rebecca Cerda, 20; and Daniela Cerda, 18—were pronounced dead at the scene. The driver of the Dodge pickup was hospitalized with serious injuries. The cause of the crash remains under investigation.
Whenever I hear about a vehicle abruptly leaving its lane and crossing into oncoming traffic without any clear reason, I think about how critical it is to examine whether something went wrong with the vehicle itself. In my experience, sudden loss of control often points to issues like mechanical defects, tire failures, or steering malfunctions, not just driver behavior.
Could a Mechanical Defect Have Caused the Dodge Pickup to Veer Off the Road?
The fact that the Dodge pickup first struck a guardrail and then crossed the median into opposing lanes raises serious questions about what caused the driver to lose control. Did the driver overcorrect after drifting off the road, or was something fundamentally wrong with the vehicle?
Investigators should look closely at the Dodge’s steering components, suspension, and front-end alignment. A failure in any of these systems, especially at highway speeds, could cause the vehicle to swerve uncontrollably. Tire blowouts or tread separation are also known causes of sudden lane departures, particularly in older or heavily driven vehicles.
Why It's Important to Review Maintenance and Recall History
In crashes involving single-vehicle departures like this, it’s also necessary to examine whether the Dodge pickup had any outstanding recalls or a history of mechanical problems. Investigators should request service records, dealer maintenance logs, and any reports of prior handling or braking complaints.
A pattern of prior issues could suggest that the vehicle was vulnerable to sudden failure, even if no defect has been formally acknowledged by the manufacturer.
Physical Evidence and Electronic Data May Reveal What Happened
To determine exactly how the vehicle behaved in the moments before the crash, investigators should extract data from the pickup’s onboard systems, including the Engine Control Module (ECM) and any crash data recorder. These systems can provide insight into steering input, braking effort, vehicle speed, and throttle position. The vehicle's physical condition, particularly damage patterns and any missing components (such as tire fragments or steering linkage), should also be thoroughly documented.
Why Potential Defects Deserve Careful Scrutiny in Cases Like This
When a crash results in multiple fatalities and starts with a vehicle veering off course for no apparent reason, it's essential to consider all possible causes, including those that go beyond driver behavior. Only a complete and unbiased investigation can determine whether this crash was caused by human error, mechanical failure, or some combination of both.
