Authorities in East Ridge, Tennessee are continuing their investigation into a crash on Interstate 75 that claimed two lives and injured several others.
The incident occurred around 5:20 p.m. Sunday near the Welcome Center and Ringgold Road. Police say a semi-truck was involved in a chain-reaction crash that ultimately engulfed several vehicles in flames. In total, six passenger vehicles and one tractor-trailer were involved. Two of the vehicles caught fire after the impact.
Among the victims were 23-year-old Lane Smith, the driver of a Jeep carrying several passengers, including juveniles, and 61-year-old David "Jeff" Huggins, who was driving a Ford F-150. Both men died at the scene. The surviving passengers, including children, remain in critical condition. The driver of the semi-truck has been charged with multiple criminal offenses, including two counts of reckless homicide.
