What Caused the Three-Vehicle Crash on I-84 in Canyon County, ID?

A collision involving two semi-trucks and an Audi Q5 on I-84 near milepost 38 left two people hospitalized and shut down eastbound lanes for several hours. According to reports, a 2017 Kenworth semi-truck struck the side of the Audi, causing it to lose control and crash into the median. A second semi-truck, a 2022 Cascadia, then struck the Audi again.

When I hear about crashes like this, I think about whether truck drivers were maintaining safe following distances and whether all vehicles were operating properly.

Was the First Semi-Truck Driver Distracted?

Since the Kenworth semi-truck allegedly initiated the collision, investigators should determine whether the driver was fully attentive leading up to the crash. Was the driver distracted by a mobile device, onboard system, or other in-cab activity? Reviewing cell phone records, dashcam footage, and the driver’s work logs could help determine whether inattention played a role in the crash.

Could Mechanical Issues Have Contributed?

It’s also worth examining whether mechanical issues—such as brake failure, steering malfunctions, or a shifting load—played a role in this crash. A thorough inspection of both semi-trucks’ brake systems, tires, and weight distribution could help determine whether a defect contributed to the crash.

Evidence That Should Be Reviewed By Investigators

A full investigation should analyze ECM data from both semi-trucks, cell phone records to rule out distraction, and any available traffic camera footage to understand the sequence of events. Additionally, statements from any witnesses could provide critical insight into how the crash unfolded.

The Importance of a Full Investigation in Semi-Truck Crashes

This crash raises questions about whether the truck drivers took the necessary precautions to avoid a collision. In my experience, determining whether driver actions, mechanical issues, or unsafe lane changes played a role is essential for understanding the full story. A thorough investigation usually reveals details that could be overlooked otherwise.
