An off-duty Bexar County constable was critically injured early Wednesday morning when his parked vehicle was struck by an Amazon 18-wheeler on Interstate 35 between O’Connor Road and Crosswinds Way. Reports indicate the constable was assisting with a lane closure due to road construction and had his emergency lights activated when the crash occurred around 3 a.m. He was transported to the hospital in critical condition. Authorities are still investigating the cause of the collision.
In situations like this, it’s important to understand not only what happened but why. From my experience handling cases involving commercial vehicles, proper investigation often uncovers overlooked factors that help explain how a crash unfolded.
Was the Semi-Truck Driver Fatigued or Distracted?
Given that this crash occurred in the early morning hours—a time when fatigue can impair reaction times—investigators will likely consider whether the truck driver was fully alert. Distraction may also be a factor, especially if the driver failed to recognize emergency lights or construction signage in time. Reviewing the driver's logbooks, cell phone records, and in-cab camera footage can help determine if fatigue or inattention played a role.
Could Mechanical Issues Have Contributed?
Investigators should also inspect the semi-truck’s braking system and steering components. If there was a failure in any of these systems—or if the truck was not properly maintained—that could explain why the driver wasn’t able to stop or maneuver safely. Engine Control Module (ECM) data can provide a timeline of the truck’s speed, braking, and gear changes just before the crash.
Why a Full Investigation Is Important
When a crash involves a commercial vehicle and results in life-threatening injuries, it's essential that every contributing factor is identified. In my experience, reviewing the full scope of evidence often reveals key details that aren’t obvious at first glance. A comprehensive investigation ensures that those affected by the crash receive answers on why it happened in the first place.
