A serious three-vehicle crash shut down Highway 33 near Tetonia for more than six hours on Wednesday. According to Idaho State Police, the collision occurred between Newdale and Tetonia when a 22-year-old man driving a 1998 Kenworth eastbound allegedly crossed the center line. His truck collided with a 2022 Ford motorhome driven by a 64-year-old Florida man. Debris from the crash also hit another truck, a 2003 Kenworth operated by a 67-year-old Kansas man. Both the eastbound truck driver and the motorhome driver were transported to a local hospital with injuries.

Crashes like this raise immediate questions about why the commercial truck allegedly drifted into the oncoming lane. Investigators will need to determine whether the driver’s condition, vehicle performance, or other factors contributed.

Could Fatigue or Distraction Have Caused the Crossover?

Crossing into opposing traffic is often linked to driver fatigue or inattention. Investigators may review the truck driver’s hours-of-service records to determine if he had been on the road too long without rest. They may also examine whether distraction, such as phone use or in-cab adjustments, diverted his attention in the moments leading up to the crash. Witness accounts and any dashcam footage will be critical to establishing whether the truck gradually drifted or suddenly swerved.

Were Mechanical Problems Involved?

Another possibility investigators must consider is a mechanical issue. Steering failures, tire blowouts, or braking malfunctions can all cause a truck to veer into oncoming lanes. The fact that the truck was older, a 1998 model, could raise questions about maintenance history and whether key components were in proper condition. Maintenance logs, inspection records, and a post-crash inspection of the truck’s systems will be essential to rule out or confirm equipment failure.

Evidence That Should Be Reviewed

To piece together what happened, investigators will likely analyze Engine Control Module (ECM) data from the Kenworth for speed, throttle position, and braking activity. Physical evidence at the scene such as skid marks, gouge marks, and debris distribution can help reconstruct the exact path of the vehicles. Statements from witnesses and any surveillance or traffic camera footage will also help verify whether the alleged crossover was gradual, sudden, or linked to an evasive maneuver.

Why the Investigation Is Critical

This crash injured multiple people, so determining whether fatigue, distraction, or a mechanical issue caused the semi-truck to cross into oncoming traffic will be essential for accountability. A full investigation will also provide answers to those affected and highlight exactly what happened and why.
