Late Thursday morning, a fatal crash occurred on State Route 360 just south of Mina, Nevada. According to the Nevada Highway Patrol, a 2021 Kenworth semi-truck pulling a refrigerated box trailer was traveling northbound behind a Chevrolet Tahoe with hazard lights activated. As the semi reportedly attempted to pass the slower-moving Tahoe by entering the southbound lane, the Tahoe began a left turn onto a dirt road. The semi struck the rear driver’s side of the Tahoe, sending it spinning. The crash resulted in the death of the 86-year-old passenger in the SUV and serious injuries to the driver. The semi-truck driver was uninjured and, according to reports, later booked into the Mineral County jail.

When a semi-truck tries to pass another vehicle on a rural highway, timing and visibility are critical. I’ve seen how a small misjudgment can quickly turn fatal in other cases like this.

Was the Semi-Truck Driver Fatigued or Distracted?

One of the first things investigators will likely examine is whether the truck driver was fully attentive during the pass. Even a momentary distraction like checking a mirror or communication device can delay a reaction at high speeds. Fatigue is another concern, particularly during late-morning hours when alertness may fluctuate depending on the driver’s schedule.

Were the Turn and Passing Maneuvers Properly Executed?

Although the Tahoe had its hazard lights on, it’s important to know whether it signaled the left turn and if the turn was made safely. At the same time, it’s equally important to determine if the semi-truck began passing with a clear line of sight and allowed enough space. Questions also remain about whether the truck had time and distance to safely return to the lane if the Tahoe's maneuver was unexpected but legal.

What Evidence Could Help Clarify the Crash?

Investigators will want to review dash cam footage from the semi, which may show the Tahoe’s signaling behavior and timing of the turn. Data from the truck’s Engine Control Module (ECM) could indicate vehicle speed, braking, and throttle position just before the impact. The presence or absence of skid marks could also provide clues about the reaction time of the semi-truck driver.

Why Thorough Investigation Is Critical

This crash involves complicated timing between two moving vehicles in a rural area with limited visibility. A full investigation helps determine whether the passing maneuver was appropriate. These details are necessary to establish accountability and give those affected a clearer understanding of what led to this crash.
