Early Sunday morning, a 56-year-old man from Frisco was killed in a crash involving a semi-truck in Ector County. According to the Texas Department of Public Safety, the collision occurred around 5:30 a.m. at the intersection of State Highway 302 and FM 181. Authorities say a 2010 International truck pulling a trailer was heading east on SH 302 and attempted to turn north onto FM 181. During the turn, the truck reportedly failed to yield the right of way and an oncoming 2025 Ford F-250 crashed into the trailer. The Ford’s driver, Christopher Eric Wilke, died at the scene. The truck driver was not injured. The crash remains under investigation.

When a semi-truck is involved in a fatal crash during a turn, it’s essential to determine whether the maneuver was executed safely and lawfully.

Was the Truck Driver Distracted or Fatigued?

Given the early morning timing of the crash, it’s reasonable to question whether driver fatigue or distraction contributed to the failure to yield. Investigators may need to examine the truck driver's hours of service, rest logs, and communication records to determine if they were alert and following regulations at the time of the crash.

Important Evidence to Help Understand the Crash

To get a clear picture of what happened, it’s important to collect and analyze several forms of evidence. This includes dashcam or traffic camera footage, data from the truck’s Engine Control Module (ECM), and physical measurements from the crash scene. Witness statements may also play a role in confirming how and why the truck pulled into the Ford’s path.

Why a Thorough Investigation Is Crucial

A fatal crash at an intersection involving a semi-truck demands close scrutiny. Determining whether the truck driver followed traffic rules, whether the vehicle was in safe operating condition, and whether other factors played a role is essential. These investigations ensure that critical questions are answered clearly.
