A multi-vehicle crash involving a semi-truck and three passenger vehicles sent four people to the hospital and caused major traffic backups during rush hour in Tempe, Arizona. The collision occurred just after 8 a.m. on the eastbound lanes of Loop 202 Red Mountain near McClintock Drive. Investigators report that the semi-truck had a vehicle lodged underneath the front left side of the cab. According to Department of Public Safety (DPS) troopers, two of the victims suffered life-threatening injuries, while the other two were less seriously hurt. Authorities are still investigating what led up to the crash.

Whenever I hear about a crash involving a semi-truck and multiple passenger vehicles, I immediately think about whether the truck driver was paying full attention to the road and whether the truck’s speed was appropriate for traffic conditions.

How Did the Truck End Up On Top of a Car?

With large commercial vehicles, stopping distances are significantly longer than for passenger vehicles. If traffic slowed or stopped ahead, investigators will need to determine whether the semi-truck driver was following too closely and whether they had sufficient time to stop safely. If the truck failed to slow down in time, this could indicate driver inattention, fatigue, or distraction. Reviewing surveillance footage and dashcam videos could help determine whether the driver was actively engaged or distracted at the time of impact.

Could Mechanical Issues Have Played a Role?

Investigators should also examine whether mechanical failure contributed to the crash. A brake system malfunction, worn tires, or steering issues could all lead to a loss of control. Reviewing the truck’s maintenance records and Engine Control Module (ECM) data can help determine whether a mechanical failure contributed to the crash or if the truck was properly maintained before the incident.

Why This Type of Investigation Matters

When semi-trucks collide with passenger vehicles, the results are often catastrophic due to the size and weight differences. Understanding whether driver inattention, excessive speed, or a mechanical issue contributed to this crash is crucial for those affected. In my experience, thorough investigations often uncover critical details that may not be immediately obvious, but are essential for determining accountability.
