A 31-year-old man died early Friday morning after his SUV collided with a semi-truck near a truck stop on I-40 and Lakeside in Amarillo. According to the Amarillo Police Department, the crash occurred around 1:01 a.m. as a tractor-trailer was pulling out of the Pilot Travel Center onto Lakeside. A Jeep Liberty, driven by Leonard Franco, allegedly struck the semi as it entered the roadway. Officers who had been responding to a nearby disturbance witnessed the crash and immediately began life-saving efforts, but Franco was pronounced dead at the scene. The truck driver was not injured. Amarillo police are continuing to investigate.

Whenever a crash involves a semi-truck exiting a private lot, one of the first questions is whether the truck was entering the roadway safely and lawfully. A vehicle that pulls out across traffic must do so without creating a hazard for approaching drivers.

Was the Semi-Truck’s Exit Maneuver Lawful and Safe?

The critical question here is whether the semi-truck was pulling out cautiously. Trucks leaving facilities like truck stops are required to yield to oncoming traffic and ensure a clear and safe path before entering the road. If the semi blocked multiple lanes of traffic or entered the roadway without sufficient clearance, that could have contributed to the collision. Investigators will likely examine whether the truck’s lighting and signals were clearly visible and whether the driver had an unobstructed view of approaching vehicles.

Could Distraction or Fatigue Have Been a Factor?

This crash happened at a time when both commercial and personal drivers may be more prone to fatigue or reduced alertness. Investigators will likely consider whether either driver was tired or distracted at the time of the crash. Reviewing hours-of-service records for the truck driver and phone records for both parties may help clarify whether these issues played a role.

What Types of Evidence Should Be Reviewed?

To determine what happened, investigators will need to gather surveillance footage from the truck stop and nearby intersections, inspect the Engine Control Module (ECM) from the semi-truck for speed and braking data, and review statements from officers who witnessed the crash.

Why a Thorough Investigation Is Critical

When a crash results in a fatality, especially in cases involving a large commercial vehicle, it’s crucial to understand how and why it occurred. Without a full investigation, we’re left with assumptions instead of answers. A complete review of the evidence can help ensure that any contributing factors are fully understood.
