Officials reported a three-vehicle crash involving a tractor-trailer that left two people seriously injured on Route 28 in Shandaken Saturday afternoon. Investigators said a 41-year-old man from New Jersey was driving a Freightliner eastbound when his truck allegedly struck a Mazda, forcing it into the westbound lane where it collided with a Subaru. The Mazda’s occupants—a 28-year-old man and a 35-year-old woman, both from Newburgh—were airlifted to the hospital, where the woman remains in critical but stable condition and the man is in stable condition. The Subaru’s driver, a 37-year-old man from Wappingers Falls, and his 36-year-old passenger were taken to the hospital with minor injuries. Authorities later arrested the Freightliner driver, charging him with reckless endangerment, reckless driving, and multiple traffic violations.

While charges suggest concerns about driver conduct, investigators will still need to examine what led the tractor-trailer to impact the Mazda and if other contributing factors, whether mechanical, environmental, or operational, played a role.

Possible Role of Fatigue or Distraction

Although reckless driving has been cited, investigators may still consider whether fatigue or inattention contributed to the crash. Commercial drivers face long hours and demanding schedules that can impair reaction time and judgment, especially when traveling through rural, winding highways like Route 28. Reviewing the truck driver’s logbook records, rest history, and any electronic device data will help determine whether distraction or fatigue played a part in the events leading to impact.

Were There Mechanical or Equipment Issues?

Even when driver error is suspected, investigators must also rule out potential mechanical issues that could have contributed to loss of control. Problems with braking systems, steering mechanisms, or load balance can make it difficult to slow or maneuver a fully loaded tractor-trailer in time to prevent a crash. A detailed inspection of the Freightliner’s maintenance records and Engine Control Module (ECM) data will be necessary to confirm whether the truck was functioning properly at the time of the collision.

What Evidence Should Be Reviewed?

To piece together the sequence of events, investigators will likely rely on a combination of ECM data, roadway evidence, and dash camera footage if available. ECM data can reveal braking and throttle behavior seconds before the impact, while physical evidence such as skid marks and debris patterns can help establish the order of collisions. Witness statements, including from the Subaru occupants and other motorists, will also be crucial in verifying how quickly the tractor-trailer approached and whether evasive maneuvers were attempted.

Why a Comprehensive Investigation Is Important

Given the multiple vehicles and serious injuries involved, understanding whether this crash was the result of reckless operation, fatigue, mechanical malfunction, or a combination of factors is essential. A thorough investigation will ensure accountability, clarify what caused the Freightliner to allegedly initiate the chain reaction, and provide clear answers for those affected by this crash.
