UPDATE (May 22, 2024): Recent reports have been released which clarify and add certain details pertaining to what took place during this accident. According to these reports, a 33-year-old man was traveling in a Jeep Grand Cherokee which was heading southeast in the northwest bound lanes of U.S. Highway 84. This wrong-way situation led to a collision between the Jeep and an oncoming Honda Accord occupied by an 18-year-old man and a 17-year-old woman. The collision caused at least two doors to be ripped from the vehicles. The Jeep then veered off of the south side of the road where it overturned, rolling an unknown number of times before coming to a stop resting on its right side. The Accord veered off of the north side of the road where it came to a stop. A third vehicle—a Toyota Rav4 occupied by a 46-year-old woman, a 45-year-old man, and an 11-year-old girl reportedly crashed into one of the doors which had been ripped off of one of the other vehicles involved in the initial crash. It then came to a stop in the right-most of the two northwest bound lanes of the highway.
The 18-year-old man from the Honda suffered reportedly severe injuries as a result of the crash. The 17-year-old woman from the Honda, the man from the Jeep, and both of the adults from the Toyota sustained apparently minor injuries, as well. All five of the injured victims were transported to local medical facilities by EMS in order to receive necessary treatment. No other injuries have been reported. The investigation continues.
Lamb County, TX — April 26, 2024, two people were injured following a wrong-way car accident at approximately 10:30 p.m. along U.S. Highway 84.
According to authorities, a vehicle was driving eastbound in the westbound lanes of U.S. Highway 84 when the accident took place.
Officials indicate that, due to the wrong-way situation, a head-on collision took place between the wrong-way vehicle and an oncoming westbound vehicle. Two people sustained injuries as a result of the wreck. The occupant of the wrong-way vehicle suffered reportedly minor injuries, but the occupant of the other vehicle incurred apparently moderate injuries.
Additional details pertaining to this incident—including the identities of those involved—are not available at this point in time. The investigation is currently ongoing.
