A preliminary accident report indicates that a 2019 Hyundai Santa Fe was heading south in the wrong lane when it crashed into a northbound 2004 Ford F-150 near Tornillo.

The Ford driver, a 20-year-old woman whose name has not been made public yet, was seriously injured in the crash, according to the report. Her passenger, a 21-year-old woman, suffered minor injuries.

The Hyundai driver, a 54-year-old man who also suffered serious injuries, is suspected of being intoxicated at the time of the crash, the report states. He is not facing any criminal charges at this time.

Authorities have not released any additional information about the El Paso County crash.

How Did This Accident Occur?

Wrong-way crashes are often attributed to alcohol use, in my experience. If that proves to be true in the instance, investigators should consider more than just why was the Hyundai driver out of his lane: where did he get his alcohol? That is as important as determining whether a faulty steering mechanism caused him to drive in the wrong lane.

Under Texas law, alcohol providers like bars or liquor stores may share responsibility for any injuries caused by a driver who was served while visibly intoxicated. We don’t know if that is what happened in this incident, but it is a worth avenue of investigation, even if those affected by this crash have to seek an independent probe.
