Commentary by Attorney Michael Grossman

With a single-vehicle accident like this, it’s easy for folks to jump to conclusions. Obviously, many accidents like this involve things like fatigue, distracted driving, or driving drunk. Those obviously deserve attention. Of course, there are many other possibilities to consider, and authorities sometimes forget to look into the less common factors.

Did a tire blow out? Were there objects in the roadway? Did the victim’s seatbelt work properly? Did their airbag go off? Does the vehicle have some kind of defect that affects steering or braking? Did the driver have some kind of medical episode? Was the driver unlawfully over-served by a bar?

Likely or not, these are just a few examples of questions I’d expect to see an accident reconstruction answer. Otherwise, there would be too much concern that investigators missed something important. That’s never acceptable, but it’s especially unacceptable when there’s a family out there in need of answers. So, are steps being taken here to get them those answers?
