Commentary by Attorney Michael Grossman
When a bicyclist is killed in a collision with an 18-wheeler in the middle of the afternoon, in a busy area like the Woodlawn and Park Road intersection, the first legal question that needs to be asked is how did a truck and a bicycle end up in conflict at that location? Intersections in urban areas demand an especially high level of caution, and when commercial vehicles are involved, that responsibility increases significantly.
Because this crash involved an 18-wheeler, the company behind the truck also needs to be investigated. Was the driver trained to operate safely around cyclists and in high-density urban corridors? Did the company assign a route appropriate for a vehicle of that size? Were safety systems like proximity sensors or side mirrors in good working order? I’ve worked on cases where poor route planning or inadequate driver training directly contributed to fatal outcomes like this one.
Getting to the bottom of a crash like this means asking the right questions and refusing to stop at surface-level explanations. Serious wrecks deserve serious investigation, not assumptions. Understanding how the truck and the bicycle came into conflict, whether the driver took the necessary precautions, and whether the company met its safety obligations is key to figuring out what might have happened. Getting clear answers to these questions is the least that can be done to help those affected find the clarity and closure they deserve.
