“How does a crash like this happen?”
That’s a fair question when someone reportedly pulls out of a parking lot, fails to yield, and ends up not just hitting another car—but crashing into a wall. And when authorities say the driver was under the influence, that raises another important question: How did they end up in that condition in the first place?
More often than not, drunk drivers don’t start out that way behind the wheel—they start at a bar or restaurant. In this case, official reports say the driver was coming directly from a local cocktail lounge. That raises concerns about whether alcohol was served responsibly inside the establishment before the crash occurred.
Under Texas dram shop laws, bars and restaurants have a legal duty not to serve alcohol to someone who’s already obviously intoxicated. When they ignore that responsibility, the consequences don’t just stay inside the bar—they spill out onto the road. That’s why it’s so critical to investigate whether the person was overserved, and whether the alcohol provider followed the law.
Unfortunately, many investigations stop at identifying that a driver was intoxicated. But from where I sit, that’s only half the story. Determining where and how someone became intoxicated isn’t just about assigning responsibility—it’s about preventing the next crash before it happens.
If an alcohol provider contributed to this incident, holding them accountable not only helps the injured party get the full truth—it also helps ensure the same thing doesn’t happen to someone else’s family.
