Right now, the exact cause of the crash is unclear. Frankly, at 2:00 a.m., alcohol is the most likely culprit. Authorities are usually more vocal about charging people for drunk driving, so maybe that isn’t what happened here. However, alcohol-related accidents can be incredibly complex, so authorities could be taking steps to ensure they know the whole story before going public.
For example, I had a case not that long ago involving a drunk driver who hit a family’s car, nearly killing a young boy. Charging the driver was only part of the story. Investigations showed he’d been drinking at a bar, and the establishment illegally over-served him. That meant they, too, had consequences to face, which of course required further investigations. It wasn’t the sort of thing that only needed a cursory glance at a crash scene to thoroughly address.
Like I said, that’s just one possibility. It’s possible alcohol had nothing to do with this crash. My point is that authorities are not always going to be able to just look at a crash scene and get the facts. In my experience, officers can often be in over their head if departments don’t provide them with the equipment, manpower, and time needed to look into more challenging possible situations. That’s why it’s often best that victims and families are proactive rather than waiting around for answers authorities may not really be looking for. It’s important they know if and when someone will need to come in and pick up the slack.
