Commentary by Attorney Michael Grossman
While exact details surrounding the crash remain unconfirmed, authorities made note that Josey Taylor has a stop sign. Even with that in mind, it’s important to give the victim the benefit of the doubt until all the facts are clear. I certainly don’t have any reason to doubt these initial reports, but I’ve seen too many situations where police left out a huge detail that completely changed how I looked at a crash. I’ll give an example.
A while back in West Texas, there was a crash where a man allegedly ran a stop sign, and a truck hit and killed him. Weeks later, however, I was discussing the crash with an acquaintance who happened to work with accident reconstruction out in that area. That crash came up in conversation, and he mentioned a major detail the public never got to here. Apparently, TxDOT had removed the stop signs at that crossing while working, then forgot to replace them. So how exactly did the victim run a stop sign that wasn’t there?
I know that seems like a one-in-a-million chance, but that’s exactly my point. There are so many accidents, and two are rarely the same. There’s no telling when something unusual will lead to a crash like the one described here. The concern shouldn’t be on who’s to blame. The concern should be with ensuring the victim’s loved ones are getting the full story, whatever that may be. My hope is authorities here took those steps even if they didn’t share their findings with the public.
