Authorities say that weather conditions and inattention contributed to the crash, but frankly I wonder if that’s just speculation on their part. I look at any initial statement on a motorcycle wreck with some skepticism because people tend to blame motorcyclists unfairly.
There’s a common bias against riders, and folks may be quick to assume the victim did something reckless when there may have been factors beyond their control. Was there a tire blowout? Objects in the road? Another driver who left the scene? Poor lighting or a lack of visible signage? Something unusual, like a mechanical defect?
Authorities are already relatively unlikely to consider these things, but they’re even less likely to be thorough when a crash involves a motorcycle. So if it turned out there was more to this story authorities missed, it unfortunately wouldn’t be too surprising.
