Hidalgo County, TX — December 9, 2023, Valeria Castillo Olvera and two others were injured following a car accident at 4:50 p.m. on Benito A. Ramirez Street.
Investigators said in their statements that the crash took place at the intersection of Benito A. Ramirez Street and North Kenyon Road.
According to officials, 20-year-old Valeria Castillo Olvera, a 21-year-old man, and a 5-year-old child were in a BMW traveling northbound on Kenyon. While the driver of the BMW attempted to turn onto Benito A. Ramirez Street, it appears an eastbound Jaguar allegedly speeding crashed head-on into the BMW.

Due to the collision, Castillo Olvera and the driver of the BMW had serious injuries. The other driver had apparently less serious injuries. Authorities said they believe that the driver of the Jaguar was under the influence of alcohol at the time of the crash. They recommended a charge for intoxication assault.
Commentary by Attorney Michael Grossman
If the allegations here prove to be true, it may surprise some people to see a drunk driving crash so early in the day rather than late at night or just after midnight. But this crash happened on a Saturday, and the numbers have shown time and time again that it can be more dangerous on our roads on a Saturday afternoon than on a weekday after last call.
Simply put, there is no shortage of bars, restaurants, liquor stores, and other providers ready to take advantage of the day where a lot of people have free time to kill. This inevitably leads to some unscrupulous businesses illegally over-serving people until they’re a danger to themselves and others, and that’s when accidents happen.
That’s why it stands out to me here authorities only mentioned possible charges for the alleged drunk driver and nothing about if that driver was over-served. It’s crucial to consider this possibility after a drunk driving crash to ensure there isn’t some local alcohol provider out there ducking consequences. I can say from experience handling hundreds cases against bars and other establishments that when they face consequences, they clean up their act. That means they’re no longer putting lives at risk. That alone is reason enough for authorities to investigate negligent alcohol providers. Unfortunately, the scope of a typical police investigation rarely extends that broadly. I can only hope authorities here are taking a more thorough approach.
