Commentary by Attorney Michael Grossman

People sometimes see reports like this, where it seems obvious authorities have a suspected wrongdoer, and they assume everything is open-and-shut. A lot of the time, though, investigations need to be more thorough. Even someone is obviously in the wrong, authorities don’t generally prioritize the sort of evidence victims and families need for their own purposes after a crash.

That’s one of the reasons independent investigations are such a valuable tool. Since their efforts focus on getting all the facts, they can dig deeper than a typical police report. In my experience, the more information families have telling their story, the better their chances of getting a just resolution. Without those efforts, there may be too much wiggle room for insurance companies or others to weasel out of responsibility.
