Commentary by Attorney Michael Grossman

A deadly crash is all but guaranteed to result in a complex accident scene. It’s important, then, that investigations treat the accident with care and take all possible factors seriously. Sometimes, that’s not a priority for police departments. If officers don’t have the time or tools they need to do a careful, thorough reconstruction, important details may slip through the cracks.

That’s one of the reasons independent investigations can be such an important tool for victims and families. When they’re most in need of answers, it can help to have professionals who are trained and equipped to get those answers doing the digging. If they reaffirm what authorities already know, that’s good. Otherwise, if the official investigations came up short, an independent investigation can help pick up the slack.
