Commentary by Attorney Michael Grossman

When passenger vehicles and large trucks collide at intersections, the consequences are often severe, as seen in this crash. A closer look at the circumstances surrounding the collision offers several angles for investigation:

Traffic Control and Right of Way: Investigators should determine what traffic controls were in place — signals, stop signs or yield signs — and whether all parties followed them. Proper signal timing and clear signage are crucial in busy intersections, particularly those handling heavy vehicle traffic.

Visibility and Timing: The crash raises questions about visibility and timing. Were sightlines at the intersection obstructed by other vehicles, structures or environmental factors? Additionally, was either driver traveling at a speed that made reacting to the situation more difficult?.

Driver Behavior and Conduct: For the semi-truck driver, distraction, fatigue or speeding could have contributed to the crash. Investigators should review black box data, witness accounts, and surveillance footage to evaluate the truck’s movements.

Intersection Design and Safety: The intersection should be evaluated for design flaws. Was it equipped to handle the volume and type of traffic present? Multi-lane intersections or those with high-speed limits can create additional risks, especially for interactions between smaller passenger vehicles and large commercial trucks.

Truck Operations and Mechanics: The semi-truck’s operation is another focal point. Large trucks require longer stopping distances, and issues such as overloading, mechanical failures, or insufficient braking power could have played a role. A review of the truck’s maintenance records and inspection reports will help clarify these aspects.

Environmental and Road Conditions: Investigators should examine the conditions at the time of the crash, including weather, lighting, and road surface quality. These factors can significantly affect reaction times and visibility for all drivers.

This collision demonstrates the importance of understanding how road design, driver behavior and vehicle operation interact to create risk. A thorough investigation is needed to uncover the factors that contributed to this crash. Unfortunately, authorities don’t always provide the answers that grieving families need. That is why a second set of eyes may be needed to look into this crash.
