San Antonio, TX — January 4, 2025, one person was killed in a truck accident at about 7:40 p.m. on U.S. Highway 90.
Authorities said a pedestrian was hit by a truck while trying to cross the highway in the 5000 block of U.S. Highway 90. There was no crosswalk at that location.

The pedestrian, whose name has not been released at this point, died after being transported to a local hospital, according to authorities.
The truck driver, who did not exhibit any signs of intoxication at the time of the crash, is not expected to face any charges in relation to the pedestrian’s death, authorities said.
Commentary by Attorney Michael Grossman
Highways are designed exclusively for vehicle traffic, and pedestrian presence in these areas often creates dangerous situations for everyone involved, so my first question when I read about an accident like this is why the pedestrian was attempting to cross in an area without a crosswalk.
A key issue in this incident is the lack of a crosswalk at the location. Was the pedestrian crossing due to a lack of safer alternatives nearby? Highways that run through urban or suburban areas often present challenges for pedestrians if there are no designated crossings or accessible pathways. Investigators should evaluate whether the highway’s design contributed to the pedestrian’s decision to cross at that point.
The truck driver’s actions also deserve attention, even though authorities do not expect charges to be filed. Was the driver traveling at a speed appropriate for the area and conditions, and did they have sufficient time to react upon seeing the pedestrian? Nighttime visibility, especially at 7:40 p.m., can be a significant factor, and investigators will need to determine whether lighting or other environmental conditions reduced the truck driver’s ability to see and avoid the pedestrian.
It’s also important to examine whether the pedestrian was visible to the driver. Were they wearing dark clothing, and was there any attempt to signal or ensure they were seen? Pedestrians crossing highways are particularly vulnerable because vehicles are often traveling at higher speeds, reducing reaction time.
Finally, this crash highlights broader concerns about pedestrian safety in areas where highways intersect with pedestrian activity. Authorities should consider whether this section of highway has a history of similar incidents and whether additional safety measures, such as improved lighting, barriers, or pedestrian crossings, are needed to prevent future crashes.
Understanding the factors that led to this collision will require a thorough investigation into the pedestrian’s actions, the driver’s behavior and the roadway design. Addressing these issues can help identify ways to reduce the risk of similar crashes in the future.
