Officials indicate that, for unknown reasons, the 18-wheeler made a lane change to the leftmost lane at an unsafe time, resulting in a collision between the back left of its trailer and the front right fender of the Chevy Travers which had been occupying that lane. The collision caused the Traverse to veer left into the westbound lanes of traffic. This resulted in a head-on collision with an oncoming Nissan Versa. The Versa was then rear-ended by the Nissan Altima which had been occupying the lane behind it.

The 64-year-old woman who had been the sole occupant of the Nissan Versa reportedly incurred severe injuries due to the crash; she was transported to a local medical facility by EMS in order to receive treatment. No other injuries were reported.
