Commentary by Attorney Michael Grossman
When crashes like this one occur, people often assume they stem from a simple mistake or lapse in attention. However, in my experience, wrecks involving passenger vehicles and large commercial trucks typically require a deeper investigation to fully understand what went wrong.
What led to the collision between the 18-wheeler and the GMC Sierra? Did one or both drivers fail to exercise proper caution, such as maintaining safe distances or monitoring blind spots? Was speed an issue, or did unexpected traffic conditions contribute to the crash? Mechanical issues, like faulty brakes or steering components, might also have played a role, leaving one or both drivers unable to avoid the collision. These are critical questions that investigators must address to determine liability.
The trucking company responsible for the 18-wheeler must also be scrutinized. Companies are obligated to ensure their vehicles are properly inspected and maintained, as well as to confirm their drivers are qualified and following safety regulations. Did the company neglect necessary maintenance, leading to equipment failure? Were the driver’s training and experience adequate for handling a vehicle of this size? Furthermore, companies sometimes pressure drivers to meet tight delivery schedules, which can result in risky decisions on the road. Investigating these factors is essential to uncover whether systemic failures played a part in the wreck.
Ultimately, the goal is to uncover the truth and provide answers to those affected by the accident. Even if it requires conducting an independent investigation to obtain critical evidence, it’s essential to examine every factor to ensure those impacted by the incident receive the clarity and closure they deserve.
