2 Killed, 3 Injured in Truck Accident on I.H. 95 in Prince George County, VA

The cause of the accident remains unclear. Officials indicate that, for as yet unknown reasons, a collision took place between a Volkswagen and an 18-wheeler. The passenger vehicle reportedly left the roadway and crashed into a tree, overturning over the course of the accident.

Two people who had been inside the Volkswagen suffered fatal injuries and were declared deceased at the scene. Additional information pertaining to this incident—including the identities of the victims—are not available at this point in time. The investigation is currently ongoing.

Commentary by Attorney Michael Grossman

When a passenger vehicle collides with an 18-wheeler and overturns, the key question isn’t just what happened, but why it happened. In my experience handling truck accident cases, wrecks like this rarely occur without multiple contributing factors that need to be examined.

What caused the initial collision? Passenger vehicles and large trucks don’t typically collide unless one of the drivers makes an unsafe maneuver or fails to react to changing road conditions. Did one of the vehicles drift out of its lane? Did the Volkswagen attempt a lane change without enough space? Investigators should review dashcam footage, black box data, and crash scene evidence to determine how the wreck unfolded.

Why did the Volkswagen leave the roadway? After the initial impact, investigators need to determine whether excessive speed, loss of control, or the force of the crash pushed the vehicle off the road. Reviewing crash scene evidence, vehicle damage, and impact angles could provide insight.

Did the truck driver have an opportunity to avoid the crash? Professional drivers are trained to anticipate hazards, but large trucks require significantly more stopping distance than smaller vehicles. Investigators should analyze braking distances, lane positioning, and black box data to determine whether the truck driver had time to take evasive action.

Did the trucking company play a role? Trucking companies are responsible for ensuring their drivers are properly trained and that their vehicles are in safe operating condition. If this driver was fatigued, under pressure to meet tight deadlines, or operating a poorly maintained truck, investigators need to uncover those details. Reviewing company policies, safety records, and past violations could provide insight into whether broader issues contributed to the crash.

At the end of the day, the most important thing is finding answers. Even if it takes an independent investigation to gather the right evidence, it’s critical to examine every factor to ensure those affected by the crash get the clarity they deserve.
