Port St. Lucie, FL — December 12, 2024, a man and woman were killed and another person was injured in a truck accident at 2:00 a.m. along Florida’s Turnpike.
According to authorities, a 41-year-old man and a 36-year-olf woman from Hauppage, New York, were traveling in a northbound Nissan Altima on Florida’s Turnpike in the vicinity north of Becker Road when the accident took place.

The cause of the accident remains unclear. Officials indicate that, for as yet unknown reasons, a collision took place between the Nissan and a Freightliner 18-wheeler. The impact apparently caused the Nissan to lose control and also crash into a concrete barrier. The 18-wheeler reportedly overturned over the course of the accident, as well.
The man and woman from the Nissan suffered fatal injuries as a result of the wreck and were declared deceased at the scene. The person who had been behind the wheel of the Freightliner sustained injuries of unknown severity; they were transported to an area medical facility by EMS in order to receive necessary treatment. Additional details pertaining to this incident—including the identities of the victims—are not available at this point in time. The investigation is currently ongoing.
Commentary by Attorney Michael Grossman
When crashes like this one occur, people often focus on the immediate collision, assuming it was caused by a single error or lapse in judgment. However, in my experience, accidents involving passenger vehicles and 18-wheelers are rarely that simple. Fully understanding this tragic event requires a detailed investigation into all contributing factors.
What led to the collision between the Freightliner and the Nissan Altima? Did the truck driver make an error, such as drifting out of their lane or following too closely? Was the Nissan attempting a maneuver that went wrong, like changing lanes or braking suddenly? Could external factors like road conditions, visibility, or even mechanical failures on either vehicle have played a role? Each of these possibilities deserves thorough examination.
The role of the trucking company operating the Freightliner must also come under scrutiny. Companies are responsible for maintaining their vehicles to ensure safe operation and for training their drivers to handle challenging situations. Was the 18-wheeler properly inspected for issues like brake malfunctions or worn tires? Did the driver have sufficient rest, or were they pressured by tight schedules that might encourage risky behavior? Investigating these elements could help determine whether the trucking company shares responsibility for the crash.
Ultimately, the goal is to uncover the truth and provide answers to those affected by this terrible event. Even if it requires conducting an independent investigation to gather critical evidence, it’s essential to examine every factor to ensure those impacted by the incident receive the clarity and closure they deserve.
