Commentary by Attorney Michael Grossman

When a vehicle crashes into the back of a slowing semi-truck, many people assume it’s a case of distracted driving or following too closely. But my experience handling truck accident cases has taught me that these crashes often have more to them than meets the eye.

One key factor investigators should examine is whether the truck was properly visible to approaching drivers. Large commercial trucks have significant blind spots for other drivers, especially if their brake lights or hazard lights aren’t working properly. Was the truck clearly signaling its slowdown? Was it moving at an appropriate speed for traffic conditions? These are important questions that shouldn’t be overlooked.

Another critical aspect is road design. Was this an area where traffic frequently slows down unexpectedly? Some highways have abrupt speed reductions or poorly designed exits that create sudden slowdowns, increasing the risk of rear-end collisions. If this stretch of U.S. 67 has a history of crashes like this, that could indicate a larger issue with how traffic moves through the area.

Finally, the possibility of an equipment failure in the Ford Expedition should be considered. Brake issues, tire blowouts or even steering malfunctions could have played a role. Investigators should look at vehicle maintenance records to determine if a mechanical problem contributed to the crash.

While rear-end collisions are often treated as straightforward, they deserve a full investigation. A proper review should consider not only driver behavior but also visibility, road conditions and potential mechanical issues to get the complete picture of what really happened.
