Commentary by Attorney Michael Grossman

When I hear about a crash where a truck goes off a bridge, my first question is, “What caused the driver to lose control so severely?” Many people assume that a bridge crash is just another roadway accident, but in my experience, these incidents often involve unique risks that require careful examination.

One of the first things investigators should determine is how the box truck and flatbed truck collided. Did one vehicle merge improperly? Was the box truck following too closely, or did the flatbed truck brake suddenly? Bridge crashes are particularly dangerous because there’s little room for error: lanes are narrow, shoulders are limited and barriers don’t always prevent vehicles from going over the edge.

Another key factor is wind and road conditions. Bridges, especially those over large bodies of water, often experience high winds that can make large trucks harder to control. If crosswinds pushed the box truck or made it unstable after the initial collision, that could have contributed to it going off the bridge. Investigators should also consider whether road surfaces were wet or slippery at the time of the crash.

Vehicle maintenance should also be examined. Was the box truck in good mechanical condition? If the truck had issues with its brakes, steering or tires, those could have made it harder for the driver to regain control after the collision. I’ve seen cases where poor maintenance turned what could have been a minor impact into a much more severe crash.

At this stage, too little is known to say exactly what led to this wreck, but that’s why a full investigation is necessary. Looking beyond the basic details — examining road conditions, vehicle maintenance records, and possible driving errors — will help ensure all contributing factors are identified and understood. Without that level of scrutiny, the full story of what happened may never come to light.
