Frankly, with this happening during daylight hours in an area which would seem to have a lot of bike and pedestrian traffic, I don’t see many scenarios where this happens if there’s a safe and attentive truck driver behind the wheel. That’s why it’s important investigators find out why this truck driver thought it was safe to turn and whether or not that belief was reasonable. Truly finding that answer, though, can be a lot more challenging than folks may realize.

Let me explain why that is. I had this case a while back where a truck driver was texting and driving, leading to an accident. Authorities cited the driver, and that was that. Well, after the family contacted us, we conducted more thorough investigations and found out the truck driver wasn’t the only person to blame. Turns out he was responding to his supervisor, who would constantly text and call drivers all day to micromanage them. If they didn’t pick up or respond immediately, they risked getting fired. Thanks to that supervisor’s ludicrous expectations, it was all but inevitable that a driver would make a mistake trying to appease him. So not only was there a driver who messed up, there was an employer who needed to clean up their act before more people got hurt.

Just to be clear, it’s possible nothing like that happened here. All I’m saying is people may be quick to settle for an easy explanation when the full story requires a much more in-depth understanding of what all led to the accident. Whoever or whatever is ultimately to blame here, it’s important the family involved knows they’re getting the whole story. That’s especially true if doing so helps prevent other families from going through something similar.
