Luzerne County, PA — September 12, 2024, one person was killed following a single-vehicle truck accident at approximately 6:00 a.m. along I.H. 80.
According to authorities, the accident took place in the westbound lanes of Interstate Highway 80.

The cause of the accident remains unclear. Officials indicate that, for as yet unknown reasons, an 18-wheeler was involved in a single-vehicle collision. It apparently came to a stop resting on its right side against the guardrails on the north side of the interstate.
The person who had been inside the truck at the time of the accident was reportedly entrapped in the wreckage and had to be extricated by emergency personnel. However, they were apparently unable to overcome the extent of the injuries they incurred over the course of the accident and were later declared deceased. No other injuries have been reported. Additional details pertaining to this incident—including the identity of the victim—are not available at this point in time. The investigation is currently ongoing.
Commentary by Attorney Michael Grossman
When accidents like this happen, it’s easy for people to assume they stem from a momentary error or bad timing. However, based on my experience, single-vehicle crashes involving large trucks are rarely straightforward and require thorough investigation. This incident along Interstate 80 is no exception.
One of the key issues investigators must examine is why the 18-wheeler lost control and overturned. Possible contributing factors include driver distraction or fatigue, adverse weather conditions, or mechanical failure such as brake or steering issues. Large trucks are inherently more difficult to maneuver, especially at highway speeds, which means even small errors in judgment or vehicle maintenance can have devastating consequences. Understanding whether the driver was following proper safety protocols or if there were external factors influencing the crash will be essential to determining what went wrong.
If the truck was operating under a commercial company, investigators should also review whether the company followed safety regulations. This includes ensuring the driver was adequately trained and that the truck was properly maintained. Mechanical failures in commercial vehicles often stem from a lack of maintenance, and any negligence in these areas could point to shared responsibility for the crash.
Ultimately, the goal is to uncover the truth and provide answers to those affected by the accident. Even if it requires conducting an independent investigation to gather vital evidence, it is crucial to consider every factor to ensure that those impacted by the crash receive the clarity and closure they deserve.
