Commentary by Attorney Michael Grossman

Hearing about a crash like this one makes me immediately ask: What led to the commercial van hitting that flatbed trailer? There’s often more to these kinds of collisions than meets the eye, especially when a semi-truck and another vehicle are involved.

The first thing to think about is how the flatbed trailer was positioned at the time of the crash. Was it parked or stopped in the roadway? If so, that raises questions about whether the truck driver took the proper precautions to make the trailer visible. Semi-trailers can be hard to spot, especially in the early morning hours when it’s dark. If there weren’t reflective markings, lights or other warnings on the trailer, that could make it difficult for other drivers to see in time to avoid a collision.

Another aspect worth exploring is the condition of the flatbed trailer itself. Was it properly maintained and equipped with reflective devices or functioning lights? It’s surprising how often overlooked maintenance issues contribute to these types of accidents.

Finally, we have to ask about the role of the roadway itself. Was the street properly lit and marked? Were there any obstructions or hazards that could have contributed to the crash? These details may not seem important at first, but they’re often part of the bigger picture.

What’s clear to me is that this accident isn’t just about what happened in the moment. It’s about the decisions leading up to it: by the drivers, the trucking company, and even those responsible for maintaining the road. Getting answers will take a thorough investigation, including reviewing the truck’s maintenance records, the van driver’s condition and any data from cameras or vehicle systems.

As with any crash, the ultimate goal is to understand what happened and why, so the injured person and his loved ones can get the clarity they deserve, and hopefully, to prevent similar crashes in the future.
