Commentary by Attorney Michael Grossman
Single-vehicle crashes like this often are not as simple as they appear, in my experience. A thorough investigation is warranted to determine if mechanical or environmental factors contributed to this accident.
Investigators should assess whether a mechanical failure, such as brake failure, steering malfunction, or a blown tire, caused the driver to lose control. The truck’s maintenance records and a forensic examination of the vehicle will be crucial.
Did the driver swerve to avoid an obstacle, animal, or another vehicle? Evidence from the crash scene, such as skid marks or eyewitness accounts, could clarify this possibility.
December in Illinois often brings icy or wet roads and low visibility due to fog. Investigators should determine if weather conditions played a role in reducing traction or obscuring the driver’s view.
Evidence from the crash scene, including tire marks, the angle of impact, and the truck’s final position, will help reconstruct the sequence of events. The truck’s engine control module (ECM) may provide data on speed, braking and steering inputs in the moments leading up to the crash.
I hope authorities devote sufficient time and attention to this crash, so the injured driver and his family can get a full picture of what happened here. If the official investigation doesn’t provide those answers for them, maybe they should seek a second look at this crash.
