Commentary by Attorney Michael Grossman

When a crash involves a vehicle running a stop sign and colliding with a semi-truck, most people assume it’s a simple case of driver error. While that may be true, my experience tells me that it’s worth asking why the driver didn’t stop.

One key factor in crashes like this is intersection visibility. Rural intersections, especially at night, often have poor lighting and obstructed sightlines due to trees, signage or other structures. Investigators should determine whether the stop sign was clearly visible and properly placed. If previous crashes have happened at this same location, that could indicate a design issue that needs attention.

Mechanical issues are another possibility. Did the pickup have brake failure or another malfunction that prevented the driver from stopping? A full vehicle inspection should be done to rule that out.

At this point, we don’t have enough details to say exactly why this crash happened. But what’s clear is that investigators should go beyond just stating that a driver ran a stop sign. If authorities don’t look at visibility, road conditions and potential vehicle issues, they may miss key details that explain what really led to this collision.
