Commentary by Attorney Michael Grossman
Crashes where a smaller vehicle rear-ends a semi-truck often lead people to assume the trailing driver was at fault. While that may ultimately be the case here, a proper investigation should go beyond surface-level assumptions and ask the key question: Why did the Mercedes crash into the back of the semi-truck?
One of the first things investigators should determine is whether the truck was moving, slowing or stopped at the time of the crash. If the truck was stopped or traveling significantly below the speed of traffic, investigators need to consider whether it had working brake lights and reflective markings. A large truck can become a deadly obstacle if other drivers can’t see it in time to react.
Another critical factor is visibility. Early morning conditions can sometimes lead to sun glare, fog or other environmental factors that make it harder to judge distances and speeds. If visibility was poor, that could explain why the Mercedes driver didn’t react in time.
At this stage, there isn’t enough public information to determine exactly what went wrong. But if authorities only focus on the fact that a car rear-ended a truck without considering visibility, truck positioning and driver behavior, they could miss critical details. A thorough investigation should take all factors into account to ensure the full story is told.
