Commentary by Attorney Michael Grossman

When I read about a crash involving two semi-trucks like this one, my first thought is to ask what caused the collision and how the vehicles ended up in each other’s paths. Intersections are common sites for serious truck crashes, particularly when large commercial vehicles are involved, due to the challenges of visibility, stopping distance and timing.

A key question is whether either truck failed to yield the right-of-way. Was there a stop sign, traffic light or other control at the intersection? Determining whether one of the drivers ignored or misjudged a traffic signal will likely be central to the investigation. Large trucks require significant time and space to stop, so any miscalculation can have severe consequences.

Another critical factor is whether visibility at the intersection was adequate. Was this a rural or semi-rural area with limited sightlines due to trees, curves, or other obstructions? Poor visibility can make it harder for drivers to see approaching vehicles and judge whether it’s safe to enter or cross the intersection. Investigators should also consider if weather or lighting conditions at 8:30 a.m. may have played a role.

The condition of both trucks and their speeds at the time of the crash also warrant attention. Investigators will likely review black box data to understand how fast each vehicle was traveling and whether either driver attempted to brake or take evasive action. Mechanical issues such as brake failures could also have contributed to the collision.

Finally, the design of the intersection itself could be a factor. Was the intersection clearly marked, and was there adequate signage to alert drivers to the crossing? If this location has a history of accidents, it may indicate the need for infrastructure improvements, such as better signage, traffic lights or clearer markings.

Crashes like this highlight the severe risks when two heavy vehicles collide, often leading to critical injuries or fatalities. A thorough investigation into driver actions, vehicle conditions and the intersection’s layout will be essential to understanding what led to this crash and identifying ways to improve safety at similar crossings in the future.
