According to officials, 28-year-old Trevor Ward was in a Chevy G Series going along U.S. 75. before pulling over on the shoulder due to mechanical issues. While there, it appears a Chevy 3500 somehow veered onto the shoulder and crashed into the G Series. As a result, Ward sustained serious injuries. Elizabeth Marie Watson, who was a passenger in the pickup, also reportedly had serious injuries.

The driver of the pickup, a Denison man, had less serious injuries. That driver was allegedly under the influence of alcohol at the time of the collision. Authorities recommended multiple charges, including intoxication assault.

Commentary by Attorney Michael Grossman

If the allegations are true, where did the alcohol come from? It’s understandable why all of the focus in these situations gets put on the drunk drivers. But there could be an alcohol provider who was an accomplice to this, and they, too, could be held responsible.

Simply put, it’s illegal in Texas to over-serve someone who is obviously intoxicated. Doing so exposes alcohol providers to potential criminal investigations, fines, license suspensions, and liability. Too often, though, authorities simply charge the drivers and move on. Meanwhile, there’s a negligent establishment continuing to put the community in danger who could have been put on the straight and narrow. So if authorities here aren’t looking beyond the crash scene to ensure there is full accountability for the crash, they may be missing something important.
