Commentary by Attorney Michael Grossman

In early morning single-vehicle crashes like this one, it’s important to ask whether investigators had the time and tools to fully examine the scene. When departments are stretched thin, these types of wrecks may not be treated as a priority, which can lead to critical details being overlooked.

It’s also necessary to consider whether a vehicle defect may have contributed. Issues like brake failure, steering problems, or tire defects can cause a driver to lose control, especially on rural roads. If the vehicle isn’t preserved and inspected properly, any evidence of a defect may be lost.

Finally, has all the available electronic data been collected? Vehicles often record crash data that can show speed, braking, and steering input, all of which are vital to understanding what really happened. Cell phone records and also any possible video evidence from nearby cameras could shed light on the events surrounding the crash.

By asking these kinds of questions, people can gauge if they feel authorities are taking the crash seriously. If they aren’t steps can be taken to have a second set of eyes look at the evidence more thoroughly to see if something important slipped through the cracks.
