Right now, it’s alleged that the driver of the Cruze was under the influence of alcohol. If that’s true, then it would likely warrant some serious consequences. But those consequences don’t necessarily begin and end at the intoxicated driver. Folks are sometimes so focused on looking for someone to blame that they forget there are legal avenues for getting people the help they need, as well. Drunk driving happens to be rather complex in that regard, as there is often a negligent alcohol provider responsible for contributing to these accidents who can be held accountable.

In Texas, alcohol providers who unlawfully over-serve someone who is obviously intoxicated exposes themselves to potential criminal investigations, fines, and liability for the victims’ injuries. Too often, though, they slip through the cracks. Even authorities can be quick to move on when they have someone facing charges. But alcohol providers who avoid consequences can simply continue over-serving people, and someone else is bound to get hurt.

That’s why it’s important accidents like this get thorough investigations beyond the typical police investigation. If there are multiple parties who broke the law and contributed to an accident, they should both face appropriate consequences, especially if that can be a step toward getting victims back on their feet. The question is if authorities here have bothered taking those steps yet or if there’s still more to this story.
