When I read about a crash like this, my first thought is that I hope the surviving passengers receive the care they need and that the loved ones of those involved get the answers they deserve. While it may appear that the collision was caused by one vehicle crossing the center line, my experience has shown that head-on crashes often involve more complexity than initially meets the eye. Before drawing any conclusions, it’s essential to ask three key questions to ensure a full and thorough investigation.
The first question is whether authorities conducted a comprehensive investigation. Law enforcement officers generally document the scene, gather witness statements, and assess visible damage, but the quality of these investigations can vary widely depending on resources and training. In a case like this, it’s critical to determine why the Dodge crossed into the oncoming lane. Investigators should explore whether there were visibility issues, driver distraction or impairment, mechanical failure, or whether the road’s design contributed in any way. If the driver of the Dodge was trying to avoid something or someone, that should be identified and documented.
The second question—one that is often overlooked—is whether a mechanical defect contributed to the crash. For either vehicle, a sudden failure in steering, braking, or stability control could have caused or worsened the collision. If the Dodge Avenger experienced something like a tire blowout or power steering failure, that could explain why it veered into the opposing lane. Likewise, the condition and safety systems of the Hyundai should be examined, especially in terms of how it protected its occupants during the crash. However, identifying such issues requires a detailed forensic examination, and if the vehicles are not preserved, key evidence could be lost.
The third question is whether all available electronic data has been collected. Both vehicles are likely equipped with electronic control modules (ECMs), which record valuable data such as speed, braking, throttle position, and steering input in the moments leading up to the crash. Additionally, nearby surveillance footage, dashcams, or even cell phone data from either driver could help clarify what happened. Because this data is time-sensitive, it must be secured quickly before it is lost or overwritten.
At the end of the day, answering these three questions isn’t just about understanding how this crash occurred—it’s about ensuring that the injured passengers and the family of the driver who lost her life have access to the full truth. Serious crashes leave lasting impacts on those involved, and the least we can do as a community is ensure that every possible explanation is explored before drawing any conclusions.
