Layton, UT — October 16, 2024, Thomas Nelson was killed as the result of a van hit-and-run accident at around 8:13 p.m. on Main Street.
Details from authorities say that the incident took place at the intersection of Main Street and 1120 North, just off Hill Field Road.

According to officials, 41-year-old Thomas Christopher Nelson was on foot at the time on 1120 N. While there, reports say a white van struck Nelson, then fled the scene. Due to the collision, Nelson ultimately suffered fatal injuries.
Authorities say an anonymous tip led them to the suspected van owner. That owner is now facing allegations of covering up damage to the vehicle. The driver is unidentified at this time, and authorities continue to search for the driver.

While it seems there is still work to be done at the time of writing, authorities say they’re making progress to ensure there are consequences for this accident. Hopefully that means all responsible parties will answer for their involvement in the fatal accident and whatever happened afterward. But there are some questions that come to mind, and I have to wonder if authorities are considering them along with their current investigations.
How much did the owner know about what happened that night? Are they actively covering for the suspected runaway driver? Did the vehicle belong to a company that has a history of shady behavior? Have they been involved in accidents before? Did this accident involve alcohol or drugs? Does this involve a business that allows people to be intoxicated on the job? Are there any others involved in attempting to cover up the hit-and-run?
Simply put, I’ve handled hundreds of cases involving commercial vehicles. Families aren’t satisfied with just seeing some charges or seeing a bad guy take the blame—rightfully so. They want to know there’s going to be accountability. That means calling out all wrongdoers and their mistakes, seeing they face appropriate consequences, and taking any steps possible to prevent their behavior from harming any other families in the future. It remains to be seen if those steps are being taken here.
