Authorities allege that alcohol was a factor in the crash, but they didn’t give any additional details. It makes me wonder if they’re really giving the crash the attention it deserves. To be clear, I’m not saying anything reported here, if true, should be ignored. Most everyone knows drunk driving is dangerous and unacceptable. But few ever consider the fact that many people involved in single-vehicle accidents are illegally over-served by the businesses where they were drinking.
I’ve handled hundreds of civil cases against bars, restaurants, and other alcohol providers all over the state—more than just about any other firm in the state. Many of those involved single-vehicle drivers who were harmed in part because a local alcohol provider broke the law and over-served them. Did that excuse their actions? Of course not. That was between the driver and their criminal defense representation. But their actions also didn’t excuse mistakes of the businesses who illegally over-served them, so they, too, got their day in court.
Again, I can’t say what all happened here, but this relative lack of public information makes me wonder if authorities have at least been more thorough behind the scenes to get the whole story here.
