Commentary by Attorney Michael Grossman
I’m often concerned anytime I read about a crash involving a teenage driver. Simply put, authorities are sometimes too quick to jump to conclusions rather than consider all possible contributing factors. Since teenagers are statistically more likely to make mistakes behind the wheel, it can be tempting for investigators to rush to judgment. A proper investigation, though, would let the evidence speak for itself.
Did the vehicle have any defects? Are there issues with the road itself? Did a tire blow out? Did someone unlawfully give alcohol to a minor? Was there another driver involved who fled the scene? Are there issues with signage or lighting on this roadway?
Likely or not, these are the kinds of questions I expect answers to when working with independent accident reconstructionists. So if authorities are able to answer the same kinds of questions, that may be a sign they’re being thorough in their investigations. Otherwise, if there are gaps in the story, it may take outside efforts to fill in those gaps.
