Officials indicate that, for reasons yet to be confirmed, the Challenger was involved in a single-vehicle collision in which it apparently struck a tree.
The teen reportedly sustained serious injuries over the course of the accident. Additional details pertaining to this incident—including the identity of the victim—are not available at this point in time. The investigation is currenty ongoing.
How Did This Accident Occur?
When it comes to single-vehicle accidents—especially those involving young drivers—most people are quick to point the finger at the person behind the wheel. However, I’ve had the opportunity to analyze hundreds of single-vehicle collisions over the last three decades. In that time, I’ve seen plenty of similar cases in which evidence of causes that went against the grain of stereotype ended up being unearthed by the investigation. That is why, as a general rule, I don’t like to make assumptions.
To be clear, I’m not insinuating that I know more about this accident than anyone else outside of the investigation. I simply want to point out that, hypothetically, something could have gone wrong with the Challenger to cause the accident, rather than driver error. For example, what if the vehicle suffered a tire blowout? Or maybe there was an issue with the steering mechanism? Has a throttle problem or brake failure been considered? Honestly, it could have been any number of things; vehicles are complex machines.
An in-depth vehicle inspection done by trained professionals in a laboratory setting would be able to pinpoint any mechanical malfunctions or product defects that played a role in the wreck. Hopefully the authorities have the wherewithal to get one done. If not, however, then a third party investigation can always do so, instead. Beyond that, it never hurts for a second perspective to go over things and make sure that nothing important falls through the cracks.
In the end, the people affected by this accident deserve to be given a clear and detailed understanding of how and why it took place. Vague assumptions based on surface-level investigation just won’t cut it. That’s doubly true when those assumptions conveniently place all the blame on the shoulders of the victim.
