Teen Girl Killed in School Bus Accident on Main Avenue in Brookings, SD

The victim was a 16-year-old girl who was apparently going northbound along the sidewalk on west side Main Avenue. At 4th, the school bus was going eastbound. The bus and the victim on the bicycle somehow crossed paths, resulting in the bus running over the girl.

As a result of the accident, the teen girl suffered fatal injuries. No other injuries were reported. Right now, it’s unclear if any charges or citations are being considered. Investigations are ongoing.

Commentary by Attorney Michael Grossman

There are many details that still need to be cleared up here, but one in particular stands out to me. The most recent images of this intersection I can find show that traffic on 4th Street has a stop sign. There isn’t available information right now about who had the right-of-way here. That said, an eastbound vehicle hitting someone crossing an area with a marked crosswalk raises concerns. If investigations find a reasonably prudent driver could have seen and avoided the victim, what was different here? Hopefully the seriousness of this situation leads authorities to dedicate ample time and effort to getting the victim’s loved ones answers.
